Hello, church.

I am sad to report that all FBC gatherings are cancelled through March 31. As the end of the month approaches and even more facts are clear, we will know what's next.

It's a sad decision, but not really a difficult one. The reasons for taking this "last resort" action have stacked up quickly in the last four days as I have conferred with church members and leaders, and we have reviewed good information like the this letter from Dr. Georgia Hay: http://bit.ly/2JbsB2B

A free country depends on individual responsibility, and students of Jesus have the best possible teacher for doing the right thing. So we will voluntarily and brightly take the advice of local, state, and federal health officials to do what slows down community spread of COVID-19. This virus is a real threat to senior adults and others, and potentially disruptive to essential medical services. By not gathering we materially break the potential of spreading infection.

Meanwhile, it's impossible to cancel church! Church is not a place or a particular event. Church is people. Church is the Body of Christ. God is giving us a unique opportunity to find creative ways to stay in touch and serve each other. We are witnesses to confidence in Jesus in front of a watching (and sometimes fearful) community. We can rediscover neighborly habits as a way to give timely ministry. We can practice family worship at home. We can watch for what God is up to all around us to turn the crisis into amazing grace. As a matter of fact, the Internet is being flooded with more and more videos of the Good News as churches all over America are posting worship and witness resources online while they don't gather. Pray for astounding results.

Our morning worship broadcasts will still happen the next two Sundays at 11 a.m. on KCYL.

So let's take a good dose of 1 Peter 1:3-7 for now, and when we return back to normal we can rejoice in how God has grown and strengthened our faith to the honor and glory of the Risen King.
